 About the Curriculum

STEMMIX represents “Flexible Learning at All Levels” to build upon foundational skills in STEM and classroom practices. This Project-Based Learning (PBL) curriculum is innovative and purposefully compact to maintain a direct focus on maximizing teaching and learning. Learners must complete a series of interdisciplinary tasks that forces them to apply basic skills. STEMMIX is versatile, inclusive, and can be used with all learners in grades K-12, as well as adults. STEMMIX is intended to operate as its own course, but can be used as a supplemental curriculum in a variety of ways such as in home schools, extracurricular/after-school programs, summer programs, childcare centers, teacher preparation programs, gifted classrooms, and professional developments, etc. However, every institution has the ability to adjust the curriculum to better fit the needs of its learners.

The depth of information and the quality of construction is defined by the ability level of the learner and the end product should reflect this. This curriculum was developed to build the students critical thinking skills within the class. The new technique that we’ve implemented centers on the way that students are allowed to emphasize choice. While students can choose any project to work on, they can switch their decision on a daily basis and start anew as they feel. However, time management will play a vital role in decision making. Students must learn to manage their time and submit their projects according to the time frames designated by the facilitator. With this concept, showing responsibility is highly important because student efficacy is a leading skill that we want our pupils to develop. Facilitators will be present to support students and to lead them in the right direction towards acquiring mastery in the learning concepts by questioning students, holding private conferences, monitoring progress throughout the class period, as well as providing clear and concise feedback. The key values students must demonstrate throughout their projects in order to be successful are accountability, authenticity, and autonomy.

Testemonials

As an intern, I observed the freedom of the students and how they were able to create their own stories, experiment, and develop into individuals. It wasn't the type of class where the students just sat and were fed all of the information. This class was a full hands on experience. It was as if they got to do their own thing, but they were actually learning. It was different and exciting to see.
